Because tomorrow begins today....
The Central California ENLACE
Program has established student advisory councils at selected schools
whose participation in the planning effort provides a well-grounded source
of ideas, feedback, and suggestions for how to adapt proven educational
programs and practices to the needs and special circumstances of central
California's rural Hispanic families and communities.
Adela Cervantes is an 8th grader at McCabe Junior High in
Mendota.
Adela's family is originally from Zacatecas, Mexico. Both parents work
seasonally for melon farmers, with her mother weeding and hoeing in the early
season and her father harvesting cantaloupes near summer's end.
Adela
has one sister and four brothers, all school-aged or pre-school aged. She
wants very much to become a teacher when she graduates from college and is
determined to do well in high school so that she will be eligible for admission
to a four-year college or university. Adela loves to play sports including
soccer and softball. She and her friends study together, practice
together, and are determined to stick together as a group to help one another
finish high school and go on to college.

 Alejandro
Higareda is also an 8th grader at McCabe Junior High School. He and his
family are originally from Zaguavo, Michoacan. Alejandro is the second to
the oldest of five boys in his family. At age 13, he will be entering high
school in the fall where his older brother is already attending.
Alejandro loves to play soccer, baseball, and basketball and
looks forward to trying out for the 9th grade teams next year. He strives
to do well in school so that he will be eligible to play sports and so that he
will qualify for college and eventually pass the qualifying examinations to
become a professional law enforcement officer. He told ENLACE staff
that he "really enjoys school at McCabe Junior High" and looks forward
to all of them moving up to high school next year.
