Among rural central California populations, culture plays a significant role in most important family decisions.
Independent of other possible barriers to college admission, enrollment, and graduation, culturally-influenced family values may limit choices.
For example, traditional gender roles and values may define how a high school girl perceives her life after high school.
Similarly, high school boys' thoughts about attending college are often influenced by perceived obligations to family, peers, and community.
Family involvement in postsecondary planning and preparation is therefore a critical factor. Culture may also have significantly positive
influences and effects on learning, motivation, achievement, and goal-setting behaviors. The ENLACE Program will, in consultation with families
and other members of the community, develop specific student support strategies that have their origins in the unique characteristics of rural Hispanic culture.
Program strategies that build upon strong cultural traditions and values will foster change while maintaining the integrity of central California’s rich
