Key Components of Career Development & Cultural Preferences

Among central California's rural Hispanic populations, there are many significant career choice implications which influence a young person's income-generating choices. For example, career choice may influence where a son or a daughter may have to reside in order to find a job. It may influence the length of time that one must spend in college. And, it may influence the degree to which an individual will be able to "give something back" to the community as an adult. College training in business, science and technology in an agriculture-based economy often leads to high-paying career opportunities in scientific and management positions close to home and family. Human services, education, and health science careers also await those with college preparation. Career development for most central California schools must address these contextual factors in all stages of a career development program.
